Indie developers shift focus to handheld gaming as market rebounds, led by Playdate success
27 October 2026
Indie developers are shifting priorities to focus on handheld gaming, capitalizing on growing revenue data that suggests dedicated gaming devices can generate meaningful sales akin to mobile monetization models. This move comes as handheld demand rebounds, with market research firm Omdia forecasting global sales of 29.3 million units by 2028, up from 19.3 million in 2023. The biggest success story so far is the Playdate, a niche handheld by macOS app developer Panic that has sold 70,000 units as of early 2024, generating over $5 million in game sales on its own digital storefront.
The Playdate's Unlikely Success
The Playdate launched in April 2022 with a unique design: a bright yellow device with a 2.7-inch monochromatic screen, a crank to provide physical interaction beyond button presses, and a $179 price tag. It shipped with a pre-loaded "season" of 24 games from notable indie developers, with new games released weekly. The strategy focused on giving developers what smartphones lack - a guaranteed audience that would specifically seek out their software.
By mid-2023, Panic revealed that the Playdate catalog had sold more than 150,000 games in its first year. This represented gross revenue of over $5 million for developers after accounting for taxes, processing fees, and Panic's 25% revenue share.
Given the Playdate's 70,000 units sold, the numbers show strong engagement: over 50% of owners purchased additional games. About 38,000 owners bought at least one game through Catalog, while 32,000 were still working through the pre-loaded Season One games. This reveals a dedicated audience engaging with a specialized hardware platform.
Stacking the Decks
Panic's hardware-first approach has created a growing market for purpose-built experiences that would struggle in broader app stores. As senior engineer Zach Gale noted, "We designed this device specifically to highlight games that wouldn't get noticed on mobile platforms." The final game in the initial 24-game season, "Simulation of Possibilities," launched in March 2022.
With millions of players increasingly adopting dedicated handheld devices, the Playdate offers indie studios a model for creating distinctive games in a less crowded market. Its success demonstrates how specialized hardware can support game designs that don't translate well to smartphones.
The Return of a Market
The Playdate's success reflects a broader handheld gaming resurgence. Omdia estimates the market reached 19.3 million units sold globally in 2023, forecasting growth to 29.3 million by 2028. About 4.7 million of those will be PC gaming handhelds that bridge mobile and console markets.
Designed for games built specifically for its 400x240 pixel display, the Playdate has been praised as a "return to form" that requires developers to consider hardware limitations as creative opportunities rather than constraints. This contrasts with the cross-platform approach dominating mobile development.
While the Nintendo 3DS first demonstrated indie potential on handhelds in 2011, newer initiatives continue emerging. The Steam collection Wonderful Handhelds, currently in Early Access, features the emulated experience "Cursed Castle" complete with virtual packaging and manual.
As Omdia observes, handheld gaming is evolving into an ecosystem integrated with PC, console, cloud, and mobile platforms. In this shifting market, the Playdate proves that dedicated hardware can support bespoke game designs while helping developers build engaged audiences.
